Litter-Robot 4 Review: Is It Actually Worth $700?

Last updated: March 2025 · 14 min read

Verdict: Yes — if you have 1–3 cats, are serious about odor control, and can afford the upfront cost. The Litter-Robot 4 is genuinely the best automatic litter box available and pays for itself in convenience within a few months. If the price is a dealbreaker, the LR3 Connect is still excellent at a lower price point.

What Is the Litter-Robot?

The Litter-Robot is a self-cleaning automatic litter box made by Whisker. It's been on the market in various versions since 2000. The LR4 is the current flagship model, released in 2022. It's shaped like a large sphere on a base unit, and it works by rotating the globe after your cat exits, separating waste clumps from clean litter, which then drops into a sealed waste drawer below.

How It Works — The Mechanics

The process is simple:

  1. Your cat enters through the opening at the side
  2. A sensor detects your cat's presence and waits for them to leave
  3. After a preset delay (default: 7 minutes), the globe rotates
  4. Litter falls through a sifting screen; clumps are too large and drop into the waste drawer
  5. The globe rotates back to ready position
  6. The waste drawer sits below, sealed and carbon-filtered

The cycle takes about 2 minutes. You don't hear much from another room. The cat returns to a clean box every time.

Odor Control Performance

This is where the Litter-Robot earns its price. Because waste is removed within minutes of the box being used, ammonia never has a chance to build up. The waste drawer has a carbon filter system (OdorTrap) that further reduces smell.

With one cat, most users empty the drawer every 10–14 days. The odor from the drawer itself is minimal if the carbon filters are fresh. Compared to a standard box that's scooped once daily, the difference in ambient room odor is dramatic.

Setup and App

Setup takes about 20 minutes. The unit is heavy (~24 lbs) so position it first, then plug in and connect to Wi-Fi. The Whisker app is one of the better companion apps in this space — it tracks when each cat uses the box, how long they're in there, and sends alerts if patterns change (which can indicate health issues). You can adjust the cycle wait time, see waste drawer fill level, and remotely trigger or pause cycles.

Litter Compatibility

The LR4 requires clumping clay litter. It doesn't work with crystals, pellets, or non-clumping litters. Use litter that clumps hard — Dr. Elsey's Ultra is the most-recommended choice. Avoid lightweight litters as they don't clump firmly enough.

You'll use about 8–10 lbs of litter for the initial fill. Top off as needed.

Litter-Robot 3 vs 4: What Changed?

The LR4 improvements over the LR3: larger opening, quieter motor, improved sensors with weight tracking, upgraded OdorTrap system, and a better app. The LR3 is still excellent and frequently on sale for $100–150 less. If you can find the LR3 Connect at a good price, it's still a top-tier choice.

Final Verdict

The Litter-Robot 4 is the most reliable, proven, and feature-rich self-cleaning litter box available. At $700, it's not for everyone. But for serious multi-cat households where odor control is a daily frustration, it's worth every dollar.
