Cat urine odour is dominated by two compounds: ammonia (from urea breakdown) and felinine (a sulphur-containing amino acid unique to cats). Understanding this is the key to choosing the right litter.

Why Clay Works

Sodium bentonite clay traps ammonia molecules within its crystalline structure. It's effective but not neutralising — the smell is contained, not eliminated.

Activated Carbon: The Real Neutraliser

Litters with activated carbon go further. The porous structure of carbon provides enormous surface area that chemically binds odour molecules rather than just containing them.

Crystal Litter: Absorption, Not Clumping

Silica gel crystals absorb urine moisture entirely, drying it before bacteria can break it down into ammonia. This is why crystal litters smell fresher for longer despite not clumping.

The Bottom Line

If odour is your primary concern, look for activated carbon additives in clumping clay, or switch to a crystal litter system. Regular scooping remains the single most effective odour control measure regardless of litter type.
